Joe Coto strives to have safe and healthy communities!

Safe Communities

As the East Side Union High School District Superintendent for fourteen years, Joe Coto helped reduce the dropout rate by over 20%. As a superintendent and teacher for 35 years, Joe knows first-hand that prevention programs are key to having safe schools and communities. He supported the San Jose Best Program which increased the collaboration between high schools and the City of San Jose to address gang prevention. This partnership reduced gang violence and created a safer environment for students. In addition, Joe was part of the San Jose Mayor's Gang Task Force. As a member of this task force he helped place off-duty police officers on high school campuses to ensure the safety of students and discourage gang activity. Joe Coto believes all communities should be free from violence to create a safe environment for our children.

Healthy Communities

As an Assembly Member, Joe Coto created and helped pass a bill that expanded health insurance for children. Furthermore, he created a statewide task force to address obesity and diabetes. Since 2004, Joe Coto collaborated with Cathedral of Faith to have an annual health fair, which serves hundreds of families in the community. In the State Senate, Joe Coto will continue working on reducing obesity and diabetes rates among children and adults, and advocating for healthy and strong communities.
